How we research products

Every guide on this site follows the same process, so you can judge how much weight to put on our picks.

1. Start from the buyer’s problem

We begin with the question people actually ask, such as “a camera with no monthly fee” or “a dash cam that survives a hot car,” and decide which specifications genuinely answer it.

2. Build a shortlist from current models

We check that every product is a current model that is widely sold, and we replace discontinued models when a successor exists.

3. Verify the facts

Specifications, storage options and subscription terms are checked against the manufacturer’s own pages wherever possible, then against independent reviews and owner reports. When sources disagree, we say so in the guide instead of guessing.

4. Weigh the long-term cost

We count what you’ll pay after the box is opened: subscriptions, required hubs, memory cards, hardwire kits and installation.

5. Be honest about testing

Unless a guide says a product was tested hands-on, our picks are researched rather than lab-tested. Practical tips from our installation experience are labelled as such.

6. Keep guides current

We review guides regularly and before major sales seasons. The date at the top of each guide shows when it was last updated. If you find an error, email us and we’ll fix it.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t accept payment for placement in a guide.
  • We don’t publish prices that go stale; links take you to the current price.
  • We don’t hide downsides. Every pick lists what to watch out for.
