The short answer
For most homes, the eufyCam S3 Pro kit is the best no-subscription pick: 4K solar cameras that record to a HomeBase with free on-device AI. Renters on a budget should look at the Tapo C125, and anyone who wants a fully wired system should get the Reolink RLK8-810B4-A PoE kit.
A monthly camera plan looks cheap until you add up three or four cameras over five years. The good news is that plenty of cameras now record to a memory card, a hub or a hard drive inside your home, and run person or vehicle detection on the device itself. You buy the hardware once and keep your footage.
This guide covers the best options for homeowners and renters in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Our picks are researched, not lab-tested: we compared manufacturer specs, subscription terms and independent reviews, and we flag exactly which features are free and which still cost extra.
If you want the short version: buy a camera with local storage and free on-device AI, and treat cloud plans as optional backup.

The best security cameras without a subscription
eufyCam S3 Pro (with HomeBase S380)
- Resolution
- 4K
- Power
- Battery + built-in solar (USB-C option)
- Local storage
- HomeBase S380: 16GB, expandable to 16TB with a drive
- Smart detection (free)
- Person, vehicle, pet, face
- Indoor/outdoor
- Outdoor
- Price range
- Premium
What we like
- Built-in solar panel means little or no manual charging
- HomeBase storage can grow to hard-drive size
- Face, person, vehicle and pet recognition with no plan
Watch out for
- Kit is a premium buy compared with microSD cameras
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only
- Eufy had an encryption controversy in 2023
The eufyCam S3 Pro is our top pick because it covers both halves of the no-subscription problem: storage and smart alerts. The 4K cameras record to the HomeBase S380, which has 16GB built in and can take a hard drive of up to 16TB, according to eufy. The HomeBase runs eufy's BionicMind local AI, which handles face, person, pet and vehicle recognition without a plan.
Each camera has a built-in solar panel and a rechargeable battery, and you can also run it from USB-C power. Eufy claims the panel collects several times the energy the camera typically uses on a sunny day, so most owners should rarely need to take it down to charge. Color night vision and a spotlight are built in, with infrared as a fallback for full darkness.
The main caveats are cost and trust. A multi-camera kit with a HomeBase is a premium purchase, and the cameras only use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. In 2023, Anker admitted some Eufy web-portal live streams were not properly encrypted and said it pushed a fix; eufy now lists AES-128 encryption for the HomeBase. If you want even wider coverage, the newer eufyCam S4 adds a pan-tilt-zoom lens alongside its 4K fixed lens, at a higher price.
TP-Link Tapo C125
- Resolution
- 2K (2560 x 1440)
- Power
- Wired (plug-in adapter)
- Local storage
- microSD up to 512GB
- Smart detection (free)
- Person, vehicle, pet
- Indoor/outdoor
- Indoor
- Price range
- Budget
What we like
- Physical privacy shutter over the lens
- Free person, pet and vehicle detection
- Also works with Apple Home, Alexa and Google
Watch out for
- Snapshot notifications need Tapo Care
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only
- Apple Home view is capped at 1080p
The Tapo C125 is the easiest way to get a capable indoor camera without paying a monthly fee. It records 2K video to a microSD card of up to 512GB, and TP-Link lists person, vehicle and pet detection as free. It also offers line-crossing, tamper and sound alerts such as baby crying and glass breaking.
Renters will like the physical privacy shutter, which you can close from the app or a button on the camera. It also works with Apple Home, which is unusual at this level, plus Alexa and Google Assistant. TP-Link notes that Apple Home caps the view at 1080p and some settings stay in the Tapo app.
Tapo Care, the paid plan, adds cloud clips and notifications that include a snapshot. Without it you still get alerts and local recording, which is enough for most people. The camera only connects on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
Reolink Argus 4 Pro
- Resolution
- 4K panoramic (5120 x 1440)
- Power
- Battery, optional Solar Panel 2
- Local storage
- microSD up to 512GB, or Reolink Home Hub
- Smart detection (free)
- Person, vehicle, animal
- Indoor/outdoor
- Outdoor (IP66)
- Price range
- Mid-range
What we like
- 180-degree dual-lens view replaces two cameras
- Color night vision without a bright spotlight
- Dual-band Wi-Fi 6
Watch out for
- Very wide but short image letterboxes on phones
- Visible seam where the two lenses join
- Solar panel not included in the base box
The Argus 4 Pro uses two lenses stitched into a single 180-degree panoramic image, so one camera can cover a whole backyard or a wide driveway. It runs on a 5,000mAh battery and pairs with Reolink's Solar Panel 2 for top-ups. Reolink lists person, vehicle and animal detection as free, along with live view and two-way audio.
Storage is flexible. You can use a microSD card up to 512GB or record to the Reolink Home Hub, which keeps footage indoors and adds NAS and RTSP options. The ColorX night mode aims for full-color footage in low light without switching on visible spotlights, and dual-band Wi-Fi 6 helps if your router is far away.
Reviewers note a few trade-offs. The image is very wide but short, so it letterboxes on a phone screen, and there can be a soft seam where the two lenses meet. The base box does not include a solar panel, so check that you are buying the bundle if you want one.
Reolink RLK8-810B4-A 4K PoE System
- Resolution
- 4K (3840 x 2160)
- Power
- PoE (one cable per camera)
- Local storage
- 8-channel NVR with 2TB HDD
- Smart detection (free)
- Person, vehicle
- Indoor/outdoor
- Outdoor
- Price range
- Premium
What we like
- Continuous 24/7 recording to a hard drive
- Works without internet for local viewing
- Four 4K cameras and NVR in one box
Watch out for
- Running Ethernet cable takes real installation work
- Narrower 87-degree view per camera
- NVR needs a monitor or the app for viewing
If you own your home and can run cables, a PoE kit is the most reliable way to avoid fees forever. This Reolink kit pairs an 8-channel NVR and a 2TB hard drive with four 4K bullet cameras. Each camera gets power and data over a single Ethernet cable, so there are no batteries to charge and no Wi-Fi dropouts.
The big advantage is continuous 24/7 recording to the hard drive, which battery cameras cannot do. Reolink says detection runs in the cameras with no uploads or subscriptions, and lists person and vehicle alerts. The NVR has room for more cameras later, so the system can grow with you.
The downside is installation. Running Ethernet through walls or soffits is a weekend job at minimum, or a cost if you hire an installer. Each camera's 87-degree horizontal view is also narrower than many consumer cameras, so plan placement carefully.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro
- Resolution
- 2.5K (2688 x 1520)
- Power
- Wi-Fi (USB-C) or PoE version
- Local storage
- Built-in eMMC (no microSD), plus NAS
- Smart detection (free)
- Person, face, vehicle, pet, package
- Indoor/outdoor
- Outdoor (IP65)
- Price range
- Mid-range
What we like
- HomeKit Secure Video and Matter support
- Doubles as a Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub
- Rare PoE option for a HomeKit camera
Watch out for
- No power adapter in the box
- No microSD slot
- Aqara app is complex
Apple users have few good outdoor cameras to choose from, and the G5 Pro is one of the strongest. It supports HomeKit Secure Video and Matter, and it also works as a Zigbee and Thread hub for other smart home devices. It comes in a Wi-Fi version powered by USB-C and a PoE version, which reviewers describe as rare for a HomeKit camera.
In the Aqara app, Tom's Guide reports on-device detection of faces, vehicles, packages and animals, plus sound alerts, with no subscription. Footage can be saved to built-in storage or a NAS drive. There is no microSD slot, so the internal memory is what you get unless you add a NAS.
Keep in mind that HomeKit Secure Video stores clips in iCloud, which requires an iCloud+ plan, and Apple Home records at 1080p. Reviewers also find the Aqara app complicated, and there is no power adapter in the box.
Google Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen)
- Resolution
- 2K HDR
- Power
- Wired (USB-C)
- Local storage
- None (cloud only)
- Smart detection (free)
- Person, animal, vehicle alerts
- Indoor/outdoor
- Indoor
- Price range
- Mid-range
What we like
- Six hours of free event previews in the cloud
- Wide 152-degree view
- Polished Google Home app
Watch out for
- No local or microSD storage at all
- Saved history and 24/7 video need Google Home Premium
- No Apple HomeKit support
The Nest Cam Indoor is the odd one out here: it has no local storage. We include it because it has one of the more useful free cloud tiers. Google says the camera includes up to six hours of event video previews with clips up to 10 seconds long, which is enough to check what just happened at home.
Reviewers report that person, animal and vehicle alerts and activity zones work without a plan. The 2K HDR sensor and wide 152-degree view are strong for an indoor camera, and the Google Home app is polished.
Anything longer than those six hours of previews needs a Google Home Premium plan, including saved event history and 24/7 video. There is no HomeKit support either. Choose this only if you are already in the Google Home ecosystem and are happy to rely on the cloud.
Wyze Cam v4
- Resolution
- 2.5K (2560 x 1440)
- Power
- Wired (plug-in)
- Local storage
- microSD up to 256GB
- Smart detection (free)
- Motion and sound only
- Indoor/outdoor
- Indoor/outdoor
- Price range
- Budget
What we like
- Very low cost for continuous local recording
- Color night vision and built-in spotlight
- Wi-Fi 6 support
Watch out for
- Person, vehicle and pet detection need Cam Plus
- Free cloud events are thumbnails only
- Wyze had a 2024 thumbnail-exposure incident
The Wyze Cam v4 is one of the cheapest ways to get continuous recording. Insert a microSD card of up to 256GB and it can record 24/7 locally with no plan. The 2.5K sensor, color night vision and built-in spotlight are good for the money, and it supports Wi-Fi 6.
Be clear on what the free tier leaves out. Wyze's plan comparison shows that without a subscription you get motion and sound detection only, cloud events as thumbnails rather than video, and a five-minute cooldown between events. Person, vehicle and pet detection need Cam Plus.
Wyze also had a February 2024 server incident in which some event thumbnails were shown to the wrong accounts. If you only need a budget camera that records everything to a card, it still makes sense; if you want smart alerts for free, the Tapo C125 is the better choice.
How to choose a security camera without a subscription
Local storage type. A microSD card is the cheapest option, but footage disappears if someone steals the camera. A hub such as the eufy HomeBase or Reolink Home Hub stays inside your home and holds much more. An NVR with a hard drive is the most robust choice and the only practical way to record 24/7 from several cameras.
Power. Battery cameras are easy to install anywhere but usually record events only, and you will need to recharge them unless you add solar. Plug-in cameras need an outlet nearby. PoE cameras use one Ethernet cable for power and data, which is the most reliable setup for owners.
Resolution. 2K is enough for most indoor rooms. For driveways and yards, 4K helps when you zoom in on faces or plates. Wider lenses spread pixels over a larger area, so a 4K panoramic camera is not as detailed as a 4K standard one at the same distance.
On-device smart detection. This is the feature brands most often lock behind a plan. Check that person, vehicle and pet alerts run on the camera or hub for free. eufy, Reolink and Tapo include them; Wyze does not.
Ecosystem. Apple users should look for HomeKit Secure Video support, such as the Aqara G5 Pro or Tapo C125. Google and Alexa households have more choice, but Nest cameras depend on the cloud.
Privacy and encryption. Look for AES encryption and two-factor login in the app. Local storage keeps your footage off company servers, but alerts and remote viewing still pass through the cloud, so a brand's security record matters.
What "no subscription" really means
Almost no camera is fully free of paid extras. "No subscription" usually means the essentials work without a plan: live view, motion alerts and recording to local storage. Here is what brands most often put behind a paywall:
- Cloud video storage. Off-site backup is the most common paid feature, and it protects you if a camera or hub is stolen.
- Smart detection. Some brands, such as Wyze, charge for person, vehicle and pet alerts.
- Rich notifications. Alerts with a snapshot or video preview often need a plan, as with Tapo Care.
- Facial recognition. Familiar-face features are frequently paid, though eufy includes them free with a HomeBase.
- Longer history and 24/7 cloud recording. Free cloud tiers usually keep hours, not weeks.
Also watch for "free trial" cloud plans. Reolink, for example, offers a free basic cloud tier for one camera, but a review site reports it can only be claimed once per account, so it works more like a trial.
How we chose
We did not test these cameras in person. We started from current models sold in the US as of October 2026 and checked each one against its manufacturer's spec page and subscription terms. We then compared those claims with independent reviews from outlets including SafeWise, Tom's Guide, Macworld, Expert Reviews and Digital Camera World.
We favored cameras that store video locally, run smart detection for free and have a clear upgrade path. We marked down products whose free tier is thin, and we listed real cons for every pick. Full sources are listed below.
Frequently asked questions
Can a security camera work without a subscription?
Yes. Most cameras from eufy, Reolink, TP-Link Tapo and Lorex record to a microSD card, hub or NVR at home and send motion alerts for free. The subscription usually only adds cloud backup, longer history or extra AI features.
Which security cameras have no monthly fees at all?
eufy cameras with a HomeBase and Reolink PoE kits are the closest to fully free, since storage and AI detection both run locally. Reolink states its NVR kits need no uploads or subscriptions. Tapo is also mostly free, though snapshot-style notifications sit behind Tapo Care.
Is microSD or a HomeBase better for local storage?
A microSD card is cheap and simple, but a thief who takes the camera also takes the footage. A HomeBase or NVR stays inside your home, holds far more video and keeps recordings safe if a camera is stolen or damaged.
Do Wyze cameras work without Cam Plus?
Yes, but with limits. Without a plan, Wyze lists motion and sound detection only, cloud events as thumbnails, and a five-minute cooldown between events. Continuous recording to a microSD card still works for free.
Does HomeKit Secure Video cost extra?
HomeKit Secure Video stores clips in iCloud, so you need an iCloud+ plan. Many Apple users already pay for iCloud+, which is why HomeKit cameras can feel subscription-free in practice. Recordings in Apple Home are capped at 1080p.
